When Romance Meets Triangles and Comedy! Review of [161125]Suki to suki to sankaku renai

Foreword: I personally found myself picking this game up when I heard from a person named Zen, who works with Micchi back in Hau Omochikaeri in delivering previews of new releases every month (for which they really deserve more credit to be perfectly honest). For the most part, he has a very pessimistic (and humorous) attitude towards these new releases, but you can rarely see him being optimistic for some games. These are the games I generally want to try, because as someone who has a similar mindset as Zen, I imagine I might have a relatively similar preferences or tastes.

For the most part, this game was hilarious. Like seriously. There’s a lot of nonsense humor which really works if you know much about the otaku subculture and its taboos. Obviously though, being funny alone does not create a good game, so let’s get on with the review to see if this is a title you should try!

While his life is peaceful with this group of friends, two people are suddenly introduced to his surroundings. One is his actual biological sister who was separated from him at a young age due to a divorce, and the other is an upperclassman who stalks the boy claiming she fell in love at first sight!

This along with the current relationships he has with Nanaru and his childhood friend Maho, there will most definitely be some love triangles involved!

and ice cream. Can’t forget ice cream.

Aliens Everywhere! Review of [140725]Girls in Black

Foreword: Wow! It feels like I haven’t posted in literally forever! I guess I was playing too much MMORPGs recently, but I also had a period when I went to Tennessee for a family vacation too… Well, I’m back now with another review! Titled “Girls in Black”, or GIB for short, this was the most recent Whirlpool game that well… Kinda… okay fine. Pretty crappy. This is weird though, since Whirlpool was able to produce really great titles… I guess they’re also being exposed to the “degradation of quality” as time passes D: In short, the game didn’t really live up to its title “girls in black”, because there was only one heroine who fits that description… out of the 3 available. Despite this, you should read this review fully, because you’ll never guess what this game was meant to be until you do…

Some of the outrageous paradigms that our alien heroine possesses

Summary: Subaru is your normal, average student who doesn’t really have too many friends. He would rather play games in his room instead of hanging out with others, and occasionally watch his younger sister Sorami pretend getting abducted by aliens. One day, when returning home from teaching a strange person with bunny ears directions, he suddenly can’t move, and finds himself slowly rising! Looking above, he sees that there’s a UFO that’s raining light directly at him! He screams for help, and just in time, a girl shoots the UFO and saves him. As he and the unknown girl fight off the UFO, he realizes this girl who was holding a futuristic gun was none other than his classmate! She, on the other hand, is now forced to erase Subaru’s memory. As fate would have it, Subaru is instead recruited into the organization that is called MIB (Men in Black), which is an organization to support the aliens who currently coexist with humans on Earth. The other options was to get his memory erased, and… Subaru didn’t really want that. Joining MIB, he’ll realize that his life has become a lot more exciting.

Subaru, run! (more…)

Review of [120629]Futsuno Fantasy

Foreword: Yay! Exams finished! I’ll be getting right back to playing VNs for this Christmas break. In addition, I’ll also be helping in the translation of Yosuga no Sora, along with other members!

Right into review of this game: I was actually expecting some dungeon-crawling game, but looking at it in VNDB told me that this game was a parody, so I threw aside this hope. Right from the first hour of playing this, I was laughing my butt off. This comedy factor continues even to the most serious moments, which kinda leads to flamboyant characters and meaningless plot. However, rest assured that if you need laughs, this is the game for you.

Title: フツウノファンタジー (lit. trans: Normal Fantasy)
Producers: EX-ONE
Release Date: June 29th, 2012
VNDB Link: http://vndb.org/v9734
Game Type: Novel

Summary: “…Then the warriors of light defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the world.” … … …

This is the cliche for all games, but Jade, the Demon King, will not accept this fact. He has only become king after the passing of his father for a short period of time, and he feels like he does not want to die. With this in mind, he takes the magical grimoire, Libra, and searches for this hero who is destined to kill him. Soon enough, he finds her, and gets to see her powers in action…

and she is killed by a slimy, the weakest demon.

Jade is happy (?) about this, but his happiness doesn’t last for long; he sees the warrior levitate and shoot off into the distance. The next day, he sees the same warrior carelessly walking through the streets!

Story Length: Moderately Long (30 hours)
Complete Story Clearing Difficulty: Easy
Comments: There are two parts; make sure in part 1, you raise affection with all characters in the battle, and accept each of their feelings. This leads to the split in part 2.

Main characters of this game

Character Design Rating: 3/10
Story Rating: 5/10
Game Quality: Low
Overall Rating: 4/10
Rating Comments: Character design isn’t too good… in fact, it’s much too cliche for these kinds of games. Yes, it is considered a parody. Yes, it got all its “story points” from the elaborate humor, but without a good story, this game is no better than a nukige.

Sexual Content: Moderately low

Comments: I really can’t give too much opinions on parodies in general, because they’re only made to make the players laugh, and nothing else. Yes, I was slapping my knee while literally drowning myself in laughter, but in the end, I didn’t get too much “heartwarming” or satisfaction while playing this game. The characters are charming, but not lovable. The CG is unique, but of low quality. The storyline is fun, but very predictable.

The priestess happens to play the role of a “succubus”. (OH THE IRONY)

Affection for the Characters: Low

CG Quality: Low
Music Quality: Low

Addictiveness: Low

Conclusion: A game that should be played only for its “laughs”. Story and CG aren’t that great, and you won’t find much satisfaction from playing this game either, due to it being a parody.
